Men want the conversation to be a give-and-take situation. In fact, men take it as a sign of disinterest if they have to carry the conversation on their own. If you do not have anything to add just tell them. If you do not care for the topic, then change it. Just tell him that you do not understand the topic or really do not like (or even dislike) the topic. If he cares about you then the topic will change.
I am what most people would call a "car guy", however I do not go on about my first car. When I am with my pals, we talk cars. When I am out with a women, be it platonic or romantic, I discuss things of mutual interest. I had those guys that drone on about things that are not really of interest to anyone except them.
