It is difficult enough for men to ask out women. It becomes nearly impossible for anyone except the most self assured of men to ask out a woman who says that he or some action he took is "goofy", "silly" or some such. His interpretation of what you just said as that you do not see him as a viable love interest. You see him as a friend or a little brother type.
"Cute" and "adorable" tend to fall in the same category. They are words that you would use to describe a little kid. "Sweet" could go either way.
