Men despise women who lead men on. It rings of dishonesty, lack of care for others, immaturity and insecurity.
Men who are being led on will be hurt when the ruse comes to an end. Even though, you may have verbally told him that you are not interested, your non-verbals spoke louder against you. He may feel that he can win your affection or that the longer you are around him the more likely you will develop feelings for him. The longer the ruse continues the more enamoured the man will become. He will become more attached. In today's society some of these do end quite badly.
Men who witness such behavior as a woman leading another man on is not going to want to date her. He thinks that she is so insecure that she has to draw attention from someone she does not even care for. He is also going to see her as immature for the very same reason.
A perfectly stable relationship may crumble because a woman leading another man on. The man in the relationship is not worried about her leaving him, he just does not want to be with someone so callous, insecure, and immature.
So leading someone on is a great way to hurt people, get yourself hurt, lose out on a great man, and possibly end a relationship.
