Most "guys" are going to use that line as a cover. You should be able to tell if the man that you are seeing is one of those "my word is my bond" type men. Their sense of honor is apparent. If you would use the word "dignified" to describe them then that is a sure sign.
Most men are offended when their honor is questioned, so how do you tell for the rest. I do not believe in "women's intuition". I do not know many men that do. By the time that you become exclusive, you should have some idea of who he is. If you sense that he is lying then the only thing to do is break up. It really does come down to trust. If you do believe him then fall on your sword immediately. If you believe him and hold off on telling him, it is just going to make things worse. The sooner you tell him that you believe him, the less convincing that you will have to do.
