Women I know have pretended to be dating someone in order to either deflect an unwanted suitor or to attract a desirable suitor.
The unwanted suitor hears "I am in a relationship. If I was not in a relationship, then I might consider dating you." He hears a ring of hope. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Tell him the truth.
The desirable suitor hears "I am unavailable, so move on to someone else." or maybe he thinks that you are not into him. If a man is looking for a relationship, he is going to skip over anyone that is not available. He is not going to wait months for you to "break up with your boyfriend". He might not even wait days.
This is not the movies or television. Those tactics do not work in real life.
