Assume for a minute that you need help with something such as your taxes. This man that you fancy comes by to help you with your taxes. You can offer to repay him in any fashion except the exchange of money. By giving him cash you have just demonstrated to him that you do not fancy him. You have set the employer-employee barrier. You pay the 12 year neighbor boy who cuts your lawn. So essence, in his mind you have set him on the same level as a 12 year old.
The exchange of money minimizes your time together. First, he may be insulted and keep his distance. Also the giving of the money generally indicates it is time to leave. If you really have an interest in him, you should do something to maximize your time together such as fix him dinner or take him out to dinner. Invite him to a movie or ask him to stay to watch a movie.
